One Dead, 2 More Hurt As Car Carrier Runs Red Light, Hits Van At Hunterdon County Intersection

A 77-year-old driver was killed and two others were hospitalized after a car-carrying trailer ran a red light and slammed into two other vehicles at a Hunterdon County intersection, authorities said.

An open multiple car carrier trailer was heading northbound on Route 202 near Dory Dilts Road in Raritan Township when it failed to stop at the red light, striking a westbound Nissan Altima and a Nissan commercial van as they crossed through the intersection just after 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 8, Police Lt. Scott Nelson said in a release.

The Altima driver, John Monahan, 77, of Three Bridges, was rushed to Hunterdon Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, Nelson said.

Both occupants of the commercial van were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Nelson said.

The driver of the trailer, Joseph Boettinger, Jr., 56, of West Orange, was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Assisting agencies include the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, the Raritan Township Fire Department, Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office, Readington Township Police Department, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
